How Vodka started
While the name vodka is a relation to the Russian voda (“water”), the origins of the liquor are a matter of debate. Some claim that it originated as early as the 8th or 9th century in either Poland or Russia. Regardless of when or where it originated, a liquor called vodka was present in Russia during the 14th century. The beverage was popular mainly in Russia, Poland, and the Balkan states until soon after World War II, when consumption began to increase rapidly in the United States and then in Europe.

How Vodka is made
Vodka is typically made from fermented grains or potatoes and distilled to high proof to remove impurities. The distilled liquid is then filtered and diluted with water to desired alcohol content, usually around 40% alcohol by volume (ABV). Some vodka producers may also add flavourings or other ingredients to the final product.
