With white wine sales in the UK still dominating the colour categories, with a total market share of around 42%, make sure your offering is extensive and exciting enough to reflect this if you want to make the most from your wine sales.
Chardonnay, Pinot Grigio and Sauvignon Blanc might steal most of the limelight but there are literally dozens of other white wine grapes out there. Our range features around 50, whether they’re single varietal wines like Picpoul de Pinet or blends like Gatito Loco Rioja Blanco (Viura and Tempranillo Blanco).
There’s also a broad variety of styles to consider, even within the same grape variety, and we’ve worked hard to try and include as many of these in our range as possible in order to give our customers maximum choice.
Sauvignon Blanc is probably the most popular of these and you’ll find terroir-driven wines like Pouilly-Fumé and Iona in South Africa, citrus and grassy versions like Casa Defra in Italy and Zephyr from New Zealand and more tropical fruit-driven wines like Altitudes Reserva from Chile and Mayfly also from New Zealand.
On the other hand, if you’re looking to get away from Sauvignon Blanc, especially Marlborough Sauvignon, then we’ve got plenty of lookalikes that’ll fit the bill. Check out our article on White Wine Grape Varieties for inspiration but grapes like Bacchus, Pecorino, Picpoul and Vermentino are all credible alternatives.
Our white wine range covers the full taste spectrum from crisp, dry and mineral-rich, like Chablis and Sancerre, to zingy, aromatic and fruity, like the increasingly popular Albariño and Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc right through to full, creamy and gently-spiced, like New World Chardonnay and Viognier.
As well as the fruit-forward styles of whites, we’ve sourced some awesome barrel-fermented/aged wines that focus on building texture and well-integrated oak flavours with wines like Iona Chardonnay from South Africa, Verum Chardonnay from Argentina and Sherwood’s Stoney Range Pinot Gris from NZ all worth trying.
Then there’s those at the sweeter end of the scale such as Moscato d’Asti or Sauternes which are ideal with spicy food, cheese or desserts.
The demand for orange wines (aka skin-contact wines) and natural wines (those of low-intervention made from organically-grown grapes, fermented naturally and bottled cloudy) continues to grow steadily.
We’ve built up a nice little collection from places as diverse as Romania, Italy and Spain. The Solara Natural Orange, Fabrizio Vella Bianco and Gran Cerdo Blanco respectively represent unbeatable value and are all cleanly made styles, free from funk and mousy characteristics associated with more volatile or poorly-made wines.
We also have more premium styles of orange and natural wines that are ideal with gastronomy. We can highly recommend the unique Tombacco Origine Bianco from Sicily, a wine which is nearly four years in the making, and the outstanding Bodegas Bernabeleva pair of Camino de Navaherreros and Navaherreros Blanco from Spain’s Gredos Mountains near Madrid.
If you’re happy to be more adventurous and appeal to consumers’ willingness to try less familiar wines, why not consider the native Greek Assyrtiko or Malagouzia from Papagiannakos, Sardinian Vermentino from Mora & Memo or even English Bacchus from Chapel Down or Sixteen Ridges.
