Once associated with Old World countries, today rosé wines are made in all wine-producing countries around the world although more than 80% of production is coming from just four countries. In order of importance, these are France, the US, Spain and Italy.
Global consumption has been steadily growing over the past decade, so much so that 1 in 10 bottles of wine consumed in the world are rosé and this trend is set to continue.
Rosé wines are fulfilling consumers’ desire for wines that have the refreshment factor of whites but with flavours more aligned to red wines. They’re no longer seen as wines consumed primarily by younger women during the sunnier, summer months but rather by both sexes of all age groups all year round.
Weather still plays its part and prolonged periods of hot temperatures guarantees a spike in consumption. Larger rosé brands, especially from Provence in southern France, use their renowned Mediterranean climate in their advertising, reinforcing the association with sunny weather, and consumers latch on accordingly.
Provence has very much been leading the recent global rosé revolution and is set to continue driving the category over the coming years. These are very pale coloured rosés, barely salmon pink in colour and have a dry, light and highly refreshing quality, sometimes a little austere and on the mineral side. They’re seen as quite aspirational due to their higher price-point and are highly popular in fish and seafood restaurants.
Our range comprises four different quality levels from three different producers and two different size formats so that we have most needs covered. The fantastic wines from Château de l’Escarelle are certified organic and we also carry the award-winning Mirabeau Pure in magnum format. The world-famous Whispering Angel completes our concise range.
There are plenty of great value Provençal lookalikes in our range too from elsewhere within France and in other countries. Felicette, La Vie en Rose and Pasquiers rosé all hail from the Languedoc region, next door to Provence, and offer a similar experience at lower price points, while Romania, Portugal and South Africa offer credible alternatives from similar grapes or that are made in a similar style.
Italy’s Pinot Grigio rosé is still extremely popular with its onion skin colour and delicate fruity flavours. We have three different label options from three alternative producers that offer nuanced differences.
Pinot Noir rosé is a halfway house between PG rosé and Provence rosé. For value, Romania makes a delicious example under the Calusari label while at the premium end, the Viñas del Vero from Spain’s Somontano region is both perfumed and spicy and Sixteen Ridges shows why England and Pinot Noir are becoming synonymous with outstanding quality.
For the deeper-coloured and more food-orientated rosés, look towards Spain, the Lebanon and Argentina. These certainly have more red wine characteristics from grapes like Tempranillo, Syrah, Garnacha (Grenache) and of course Malbec. The fun-labelled Mas Donis Rosat from Celler de Capçanes in Catalonia and the Lebanese Domaine des Tourelles rosé are both made in a fuller, spicier style and are excellent with a wide variety of cuisines including spicier dishes.
Of course, we can’t underestimate the continuing popularity of California’s sweeter Zinfandel rosés and we have no fewer than 6 different labels available with one label available in both standard bottle and single serve formats. They’re all priced similarly so we’re able to offer a degree of exclusivity for venues in higher-density areas.
